Protech TESTIMONY
"On 15 expeditions to Everest, seven times to its summit, Ive tried a long list of sunscreens. None of them were notable and most irritated my skin until I began using Protech. The developers of Protech asked me to test the product in the spring of 2000 in "normal" extreme conditions and I was immediately impressed. After a great first experience I asked for more Protech to take on a month long trek to Denali, living on a glacier, facing 18 hours of sun exposure a day, high altitudes, severe cold and driving winds and snow. Protech performed! The product is fantastic and it feels great -- I use it everyday!"
-Pete Athans
Known in climbing circles simply as "Mr. Everest," Peter Athans is peerless when it comes to conquering the worlds tallest mountain. He has attained the summit of Mount Everest a record seven timesmore than any other climber who isnt of Sherpa ethnicity. In the past two decades he has participated in 15 expeditions up both the Nepalese and Tibetan sides of the mountain. In 1996 Athans led the rescue of Dr. Beck Weathers and Taiwanese expedition leader Makalu Gau, both from near death above 8,000 meters on Everest. This harrowing, successful rescue won Athans the American Alpine Clubs David A. Sowles Award, given rarely and only to climbers who have distinguished themselves through assuming great personal risk to assist those in danger. Author Jon Krakauer documented the expedition and rescue in his 1997 best-selling book, Into Thin Air. In addition to Everest, Athans has climbed on all seven continents, led expeditions to Lhotse, Nuptse, Manaslu, Makalu, and K2, completed the first alpine-style ascent of the southeast spur of Mount Hunter in Alaska, forged a new line up the rarely climbed south face of Annapurna, and successfully mounted speed ascents of Ama Dablan, Cho Oyu, and Pumori.
When he isnt making news, Athans is deeply involved in the creative elements of filming his sport. He is a high-altitude camera operator whose work has been featured in productions for Nova, National Geographic Television & Film, ABC Sports, NBC Sports, and on the big screen in Mandalay Productions feature film Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt. He has collaborated on more than a half dozen climbing films, writing, narrating, editing, and shooting. Other film credits include Everest: Into the Death Zone, Everest: The Mountain at the Millennium, Explorer on Ice, The High Route to Tibet, Surviving Everest: 50 Years of Exploration, and Sight Unseen, an episode of National Geographics Ultimate Explorer series which documents the Himalayan Cataract Projects ambitious plan to restore vision to indigent people in Nepals Kingdom of Mustang. In the more than50 years since we realized it was possible to climb Everest, over 1,400 people have achieved the top. Facing such overwhelming odds, what compels climbers towards Everest? Is it the magnetic challenge of physical endurance and mental perseverance in an incomparable landscape? In his presentation Pete will illustrate the dangers, secrets and beauty of the mountain and explore the age-old question of why the mountain continues to attract climbers of every nation.

“This product is a winner, hands-down. In over 20 years of working in the mountains as a professional guide, I have tried about every skin care product on the market. ProTech is the only product I truly like and it’s the only one I’ve used that actually works all day, without leaving my skin feeling greasy. It goes on like a high quality moisturizer (which it is) and endures sweat, biting winds and extreme conditions, hour after hour. As part of the Climbing Crew for the Primal Quest 2006, I spent 2 weeks this summer in the Utah desert enduring some of the most brutal sun and heat imaginable. We rigged and staffed 8 miles of rope across towers, bridges and canyons for what might have been the most intense adventure race to date. Many days, I didn’t have time to apply sunscreen more than once, and I never burned. This product is superior and will always be part of my kit. I’ll definitely recommend it to all my clients and friends!”

Angela has a long history of making good things happen through the service work she combines with her endeavors. In 1998, she was deputy leader of the successful First Disabled Ascent of Mt. Everest and reached the South Summit at 28,875’. Her efforts on the expedition included organizing a major clean-up high on the mountain and facilitating a semester long service program for 5 college students in the Khumbu Valley. A year later, she led an expedition on Aconcagua, which removed over 1000 kg of garbage from above 19,000’. In 2003, she led a successful all-women’s expedition to Ama Dablam, 22,454’, with two other CWP guides. The group of nine, mostly CWP alumni called themselves the mAmas Dablam, raised $23,000 for the dZi Foundation and climbed the highly technical southwest ridge without Sherpa support. Their fundraising efforts helped start a safe house for young girls in Sikkim. Angela has also trained women guides in Nepal and worked to protect the Mountain Porter. In 2001, she earned a Master’s Degree in International Mountain Conservation for her work. Angela is also Motivational Speaker and serves as a Director for the American Mountain Guides Association.
